At Macaroni Kid, we celebrate all different types of families. Macaroni Kid of Westminster-Carroll is embracing our diverse special needs community and offering this guide which includes links to special needs friendly playgrounds, activities, resources, organizations, and advocacy groups.

Organizations and Resources 

Special Olympics Maryland - Carroll County is the local chapter of the world's largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities, providing year-round training and activities.

Potomac Case Management is a mental health agency providing case management and care coordination services to children and adults in Washington, Carroll and Frederick County, Maryland.

Independent of Autism is a nonprofit organization in Westminster which serves as a resource for families and also provides social skills classes and other programs. 

Bennett Blazers teaches adaptive sports such as swimming, baseball, soccer, sled hockey, and wheelchair basketball.

Crossroads Church has a monthly club called Capernaum which is a branch of Young Life for kids with special needs. Capernaum gives young people living with intellectual and developmental disabilities the chance to experience fun and adventure, to develop fulfilling friendships and to challenge their limits while building self-esteem. 

Endless Options provides Intensive Individualized Support services which are designed to  provide instruction on a scheduled basis to children with autism in the areas of communication, functional academics, community, daily living, socialization, recreation and independence. They also offer family consultations.

The Disability Express Group is a group for teens and young adults (from middle school)  with any disability who want to have fun in the community through various social and recreational activities.  They are based in Carroll County, Maryland.

Doctors and services

Pediatric Eye Care of Maryland is a unique private practice committed to providing complete, compassionate, and timely eye care for children and adults. They strive to create a warm, comfortable environment for their patients and their parents – one that makes a visit to the eye doctor an enjoyable experience.

Therapy and Movement

The Carroll County Public Schools' (CCPS) Birth through Five program offers early intervention services to eligible children, 0-5 years of age, and their families at no cost.

Frankly Communicating provides Speech, Physical, and Occupational Therapy right in Westminster. Bonus - they accept most major insurances!

SPEECH PATHways opens the doors to communication for children and adults challenged by speech and language deficits. Offering speech and language services since 1999, SPEECH PATHways is directed by owner Kimberly A. Bell, M.S., CCC-SLP. Along with traditional speech and language services, Kim and her highly qualified therapists offer a wide variety of specialized pediatric programs that help pave the road to success.

TheraFit Rehab offers physical therapy in various locations, including Westminster. They are dedicated to providing specialized, activity-based rehabilitation and fitness programs to children, adults, and seniors with disabilities. They strive to rehabilitate their patients and restore their quality of life. 

Sue Finklestein, a child behaviorist in Pikesville, is a great resource for social skills development.

Jackie Wilson  provides occupational therapy services in Upperco, MD.

Jennifer Canterbury, is a local Speech Language Pathologist (SLP).

InMotion Physical Therapy, located right in Westminster, provides PT services. 

Schools

Carroll Lutheran School (CLS) accepts students with IEP's, 504 Plans, and medical needs on a case by case basis. They offer reduced class sizes and differentiated instruction in a faith-based environment. They don't do common core or standardized assessments, but they specialize in love, respect, and inclusion.

General Resources/Activities

TriStar Martial Arts in Eldersburg provides classes specifically geared towards students with special needs. 

Sykesville Pottery and Art Center offers a great program for students with special needs.

Carroll County Parks and Recreation provides many opportunities for adaptive recreation including cooking classes, lacrosse, a bowling league, swimming, line dancing, and more!

Ongoing Events and Local Activities

Spring Designer Bag Bingo and Vendor event to benefit Carroll County Special Olympics. There will be “Shopping Open to the Public” 4:00 pm-6:00 pm This means you don’t have to buy a Bingo Ticket to shop the vendors. 

Family Support and SECAC (Special Education Citizen's Advisory Committee) are happy to announce Resource Fair 2020. This is for parents/guardians of students Birth-21 with disabilities. The event will be at Winters Mill High School on March 9 from 6:00-7:30.

Smiles for Children in Eldersburg provides dental care for infants, children, young adults, and the special needs community!
