As we drove into Baltimore, two little voices questioned, "Are we there yet?" I laughingly responded, "Well, it takes some time to get to Disney World!" "Disney World?!" they exclaimed.
While we weren't actually heading to Florida, it didn't take long for the Disney on Ice experience to transport us to a place of magic.
My sister and I decided to take our first graders on a very special mommy and me trip to Disney on Ice. When we arrived at the pre-show party, the boys were overcome by the Disney-themed buffet of delicious kid-friendly food, snacks, and candy. LOTS of candy. When we were called out table by table to meet a special guest, the boys nervously followed. Much to their (and our) delight, Mickey was there to greet us and formally welcome us to the event.
We settled into our seats in the arena and were immediately mesmerized by the beautiful lighting designs on the ice and the glow of light up Frozen wands and other colorful displays. The smell of popcorn filled the air and vendors walked around the arena with rainbow cotton candy and Olaf cups overflowing with flavored ice. The boys were in heaven. They settled on some popcorn perfectly placed in Disney themed cereal boxes.
As they munched away, the Disney hosts entertained and engaged with the audience. They went up to children in the audience and asked their favorite characters. A little girl adamantly claimed that her name was, "Snow White." Disney trivia was a huge hit among the little ones as they screamed out answers to each question.
When the lights dimmed, my son nestled his head into my shoulder - a gesture indicating that he was both excited and thankful. What happened next is nothing short of Disney magic.
The lights. The costumes. The props. They were all beautifully designed and planned to bring each of the characters to life. My son spent most of the time staring wide-eyed. I was incredibly impressed by the caliber of talent of each of the performers. They danced on ice as if it was effortless.
As the princesses were introduced and hailed for their strong individual characteristics I looked to all of the little girls in the crowd. Each one of them could identify with Belle, Jasmine, Moana, or their other favorite character. The focus on their strength and individuality was empowering.
Equally powerful was their grace and strength as they defied gravity with amazing aerial stunts. We watched as they spun and floated in the air, tethered only by rope or fabric.
Throughout the show, I couldn't help looking into my son's eyes. To see the wonder, amazement, and appreciation on his face filled this mama heart. But, that is just what Disney is - it is magic and hope and love and family.
If you have the chance to see Disney on Ice don't pass it up. And be ready to be transported to "Disney world" - if only in your mind.
Tickets are available for remaining shows through February 10th, 2020!
I received tickets in exchange for this article. As always, opinions are 100% my own.
