It’s so hard lately to find something all three of my kids want to watch and - this is a big one - that my husband and I can also enjoy. The oldest is ready for ‘big’ kid movies with age appropriate concepts while the youngest still needs something with bright visuals and a cartoon aspect to keep him entertained. As all parents know, if the youngest one in the family isn’t entertained, odds are high that mom and dad will have to miss the movie in order to occupy the littlest.
When Disney asked Macaroni Kid publishers to review Ralph Breaks the Internet (Wreck It Ralph 2), I jumped at the chance with the hope that it would be something the whole family would love. Knowing how we all laughed through Wreck-It Ralph, I knew my chances were pretty good that another Ralph movie would be a big hit. And I was right.
Fast forward a few years, six to be exact, and best friends Ralph and Vanellope are back in the arcade. Vanellope is bored with life in her game Sugar Rush. Through an early series of events involving Ralph trying to add excitement to Vanellope’s life by building a new track into her game, the steering wheel to her game ends up broken and only an expensive one on eBay can replace it and save the members of the game from being homeless. However, the arcade owner is unwilling to cover the cost of the expensive new steering wheel.
In an effort to save his best friend’s game, Ralph breaks into the internet to get the wheel off of eBay himself. Ralph and Vanellope are off on the adventure of a lifetime as they have 24 hours to collect the money for the wheel. The price tag of the steering wheel is steep and they do everything from stealing a car to making viral videos on BuzzzTube to raise the funds, but chaos ensues and they are swept into a crazy whirlwind of events while stuck in the internet.
While I can’t say much more about the movie without giving away some of the key moments, what I can tell you is that this movie is packed full of important examples of how to be a true friend. It also shows the dark side of the internet in a way that opened the door for me to talk to my oldest about internet safety.
Ralph Breaks the Internet is a movie everyone can feel good about sharing in together. There’s also a Disney princess scene full of humor that adults will love.
