Homegrown School Lunch Week

September 17, 2016
Carroll County Public Schools will be celebrating Homegrown School Lunch Week, September 19-23.  School cafeterias will be featuring locally grown fruits and vegetables on their cafeteria lines during this week, which is also referred to as Farm to School Week.  School cafeterias in Carroll County offer locally grown produce whenever possible and work to increase the amount purchased annually.  This year, local squash, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, apples, and watermelon will be available in all schools.

A special Farm to School Celebration will take place at Robert Moton Elementary School on Thursday, September 22, during lunch.  Students will have an opportunity to visit interactive nutrition education stations in the cafeteria, taste fresh produce, and learn more about the health benefits of fruits and vegetables.  A local farmer will be present to answer questions about growing food in Carroll County for a special "know your food, know your farmer" experience.  In the classroom, students will have a "Read for Health" lesson which integrates reading and nutrition education, tying together classroom knowledge and cafeteria experience.
